Herbert Matter was born in 1907 and was a pioneer of modernist graphic design. Matter has shaped graphic design the way we know it today.

A clip from The Visual Language of Herbert Matter showing the logo development for the New Haven railroad development. Its really interesting to see how the designs developed with over 100 logos rejected. Interestingly the final design was one which sat in a grid. Maybe very relevant historically as the development of the rail road represented, infra structure and business. The early 1900’s were industrialist driven, business thrived and the west began to become more and more powerful.
